Registering a Domain

"The first step to successfully using the Internet is to register a domain name so that you own your very own permanent, instantly recognizable e-mail and web address"

If you register a domain such as www.yourgolfclubname.co.uk, this is owned by you and in addition to the www.yourgolfclubname.co.uk web address, it means that you are also entitled to use any number of e-mail addresses associated with your domain such as - for example - secretary@yourgolfclubname.co.uk. YOU OWN THESE AND THEY WILL NEVER CHANGE.

Remember, if you are using and promoting the e-mail address given to you by your current internet access provider [ie if you use BT it might be yourgolfclub@btinternet.com, if you use Demon, it might be secretary@yourgolfclub.demon.co.uk]YOU DO NOT OWN THIS AND IF YOU CHANGE SUPPLIERS, YOU WILL LOSE  IT.

This has massive implications for your letterheads, adverts, brochures and  directory type entries. You can place your domain details on these with complete confidence that they will never change, regardless of which ISP you use to connect to the Internet or to host your site in the future. It plays a vital role in the ongoing marketing of your on-line presence and the best names combine who you are with what you do.

If you are a UK based organization and are only interested in the UK market, you should register a .co.uk domain name. If you have worldwide aspirations, you should register a .com domain name. If in doubt, there is a good argument for suggesting that you should register both. You can always release them in the future, but at least it will be your decision to make! For example, Glasgow based artist William Grandison sells limited prints of golf courses from his site at www.grandisongolfgallery.com for customers all over the world, and also has www.grandisongolfgallery.co.uk. His name is descriptive and it is permanent.

We charge £15 plus VAT per annum to register and park a .co.uk name and  £20 plus VAT per annum for a .com, including all naming body fees. To make your domain "live" it then has to be hooked up with one of our Domain Management and Hosting Services. Basic hosting starts from as little as £65 plus VAT per annum.

Although we encourage our clients to become self sufficient, we do like to have some initial personal contact with you and ensure that you have the right domain and the right web hosting package for your needs, so the next step is simply to phone us on 01526 352919, or complete our on-line enquiry form. We'll explain what needs to be done, the costs involved and will then get on and do it for you.
