Email Defence: Defend yourself against Spam and Viruses

Being inundated by spam and worrying about viruses are two of the major bugbears of using the Internet. Having to wade through offers of viagra, swiss watches and phoney share offers before you read the messages you really want to is one thing, but worrying that some of these messages - and even those from people you know - may contain a virus of something that will harm your computer, is quite another.

IWM's Email Defence service offers comprehensive protection against spam, worms and viruses, email attacks and more and ensures that you have your own permanent email address that can be used in conjunction with any Internet Supplier and includes comprehensive protection against spam, worms and viruses, email attacks and more. We can either host your domain email services for you OR you can continue to use the same hosting service that you currently use, or you can register a new domain with any supplier of your choice.

1] How to use Email Defence if IWM host your domain email for you
You can either use an address at one of our existing domains [ie firstname.surname@family.uk.com] or if you already own a domain name you can use this or we can register a domain of your choice. The benefits are:

• You have your own control panel to manage your own POP3 email account
• You can choose your own username and password for your POP3 email account
• Your domain has its own mailservers so your incoming and outgoing mailservers are [for example] “yourdomainname.com”
• Your POP3 account can be set up to forward to another address when you are on holiday
• You can use webmail [via sites like www.mail2web.com] to check your email and send new messages from any location when you are on the move
• Your email is cleaned of spam and viruses on-line BEFORE it gets to your mailserver – ie before it gets to your pc so you don’t need to update anything. We do it all for you.
• You receive a quarantine report every day and so can release any mail held in quarantine that you do want.

The basic cost is £25 plus VAT per account per annum. If we register a domain for you we charge £30 plus VAT to register a .co.uk domain for 2 years, and £40 plus VAT to register a .com domain for 2 years. Alternatively you can register your own domain using any on-line supplier and then simply point the nameservers to:
ns1.iwhosting.net
ns2.iwhosting.net

and we will host your domain for you, but you will be responsible for renewing your domain name every 2 years.

2] How to use email Defence if you already have a domain and your email is hosted elsewhere.
Simply let us know the addresses that you want protected. You then point your domain's MX record to an address that we give you, your mail is then "washed" and we then point your mail back to you. Your current hosting details will remain the same, however, Email Defence will only "wash" and protect the named accounts you tell us about, whilst still allowing mail addressed to your other accounts to go through and be delivered to you "unwashed".  You may still have all the benefits of the above, but will have to check with your current host that you do. However, you will definitely have the following benefits:

• There is no "upheaval" in having to cancel or move from your current hosting supplier, so your usernames and passwords will remain the same
• Your email is cleaned of spam and viruses BEFORE it gets to your mailserver – ie before it gets to your pc so you don’t need to update anything. We do it all for you.
• You receive a quarantine report every day and so can release any mail held in quarantine that you do want.

This basic service costs the same as if we were to host your domain - £25 plus VAT per annum per account. 

How does Email Defence work and why is it different from other methods of Spam and Virus protection?
1] Our service is web based and all email is filtered prior to reaching your pc, let alone your inbox. Any suspect messages are moved to an on-line quarantine area where YOU can safely read the message and decide whether to ignore, or deny the message forever!

Whereas other suppliers only protect mail once it gets to your pc or to your firm’s network, with Email Defence your MX record [the part of your domain that handles your email] is pointed to – for want of a better description – our washing machine, where any dodgy mail is then quarantined.

Our system then points the mail back to your server, and so only clean mail is delivered to your inbox. The added advantage is that if you want to get your email on the move by using a service like www.mail2web.com and use a pc other than the one on your desktop in the office, when you input your mailserver, username and password, your mail will already have been cleaned. The system sends you a quarantine report every day so you can see what messages have been stopped and have the choice of releasing anything you want.

2] Whereas other suppliers are cost prohibitive for small to medium sized businesses, our service only costs £25 plus VAT per annum per user. There is no set up fee or minimum number of users. The only thing you have to do is to point your domain’s MX record to our server, tell us the name of your IP number for us to point your clean mail to, and let us know the account[s] you want to be protected. Within an hour, your mail will be protected and you will have your inbox back!
